SAMPLE LETTER #1
To: (State Assemblymember, State Senator or Governor)

As a parent of a child in X grade, I was both outraged and saddened to learn about the Governor’s proposal to cut funding to our schools. Year after year, we are being forced to fight to ensure our children receive the quality education they need and deserve.
While there are extraordinary challenges in balancing the state’s budget, along with PTA, I strongly oppose the Governor’s 2008-2009 budget proposal and his plan to suspend Proposition 98.  Our students and schools did not create this budget problem and our children must not pay the price.

At my school, these cuts could mean (EXAMPLES – ASK YOUR PRINCIPAL FOR SPECIFIC ONES IF YOU NEED  HELP)
                increasing our already large class sizes by 3 to 5 more students per class.
                Doing away with class size reduction in our kindergarten, first grade, etc
                Cutting advanced classes in history and math
               
Voters passed Proposition 98 almost 20 years ago to ensure our students and schools receive minimum funding and they strongly reaffirmed their support for the minimum funding law in 2005.  PTA believes that legislators must recognize that Californians are committed to at least this level of school funding.

PTA believes that a state budget proposal that looks at cuts alone is not a real solution because it doesn’t address California’s underlying problem of inadequate and unstable revenue resources.  We cannot talk about spending cuts without also talking about increasing revenues.  PTA believes that across the board cuts that do not recognize children’s health and well being as a priority are unacceptable.

The Governor and the Legislature must meet their responsibility to California’s children, on whose success the future of California rests.
